Nursing Home Neglect

Recognizing the Signs of Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect

When families place their loved ones in nursing homes, they do so with trust, trust that their family member will be cared for with dignity, compassion, and professionalism. Unfortunately, nursing home abuse and neglect remain serious and often underreported problems in the U.S. At Grewer Law Group, we believe in protecting the most vulnerable members of our community. That begins with knowing what to look for.

Physical Signs of Abuse or Neglect

Unexplained injuries such as bruises, cuts, burns, or broken bones may be signs of physical abuse or neglect. Bedsores (pressure ulcers), especially in their advanced stages, often indicate that a resident is not being turned or moved regularly. Poor hygiene, sudden weight loss, and signs of dehydration can also point to neglect.

Emotional and Behavioral Changes

Abuse isn’t always physical. Emotional and psychological abuse can be just as damaging, and often harder to detect. If your loved one suddenly becomes withdrawn, anxious, depressed, or fearful, particularly around certain staff members, it could be a sign that something is wrong. Changes in sleep patterns, mood swings, or refusing to speak openly may also indicate mistreatment.

Environmental Clues

A resident’s surroundings can reveal much about the quality of care. Dirty linens, unclean bathrooms, foul odors, or unattended safety hazards may all be signs of systemic neglect. Overworked or indifferent staff may also be a red flag. Pay attention and be aware at all times.

Financial Irregularities

Financial abuse can occur when a resident is manipulated into giving away money, signing

documents, or changing account details. Keep an eye on unusual bank activity, missing personal belongings, or sudden changes to wills or financial arrangements.

What to Do If You Suspect Abuse

If you believe your loved one is being abused or neglected in a nursing home, it’s essential to act quickly. Document your observations, speak with the facility’s management, and contact local authorities if necessary. Then, reach out to an experienced nursing home abuse attorney.

At Grewer Law Group, we are dedicated to helping families seek justice for elderly loved ones who have suffered mistreatment. Our legal team will guide you through every step of the process and fight to hold negligent facilities accountable.
