Things to Do Immediately After a Personal Injury

Did you recently experience some type of personal injury? Maybe you fell or someone hit you with their vehicle? What you do immediately after a personal injury matters. Make sure that you are careful about what you do and what you say in the hours and days following your injury. It could make a difference when you have your day in court.

What to Do Immediately After a Personal Injury

Immediately after a personal injury, you need to do several things. You want to make sure you are safe, and from there, address any injuries anyone has. Here are some of the most important things to do first.

  • Get somewhere safe and survey the area.
  • Call in the authorities so there is a report of the incident.
  • If you have a camera, take photos of the entire area and anyone that was around.
  • Ask people to write down their names and numbers for witness statements.
  • Seek medical attention for your injuries and so that reports can be made.
  • Follow all of your doctor’s instructions.
  • Reach out to an attorney to help manage this so you can focus on your recovery.

What You Should Never Do Immediately After a Personal Injury

Right after any type of personal injury, you also want to avoid a few things. First, you should avoid apologizing in any way. You never want to admit that any part of the problem was your fault, even if it was. Second, you never want to leave the area. Even if you come back later, leaving is not a good idea. Preservation of the area following the injury is very important, so make sure that you never leave until told to do so by the authorities. Finally, you never want to try and work out any type of a settlement with the accused on your own. It could cost you any type of settlement from the courts later on.
