Slip and Fall Injury

What to Do After a Slip and Fall Accident

Slip and fall accidents can happen anywhere, whether you are at work or simply at a convenience store. Many of these accidents occur due to negligence. This is when an owner is aware there is a hazard that could cause slipping and falling and does nothing about it.

When this occurs, you may be entitled to compensation. If you have had a slip and fall accident, make sure you follow the right steps after it occurs.

Look for Injuries

Your safety is most important. Don’t make sudden movements after a fall, as this could result in worse injuries. Instead, check for aching, sharp pains, or other signs of injury. If there is a pain in the back or tingling in the legs and arms, remain still until emergency personnel arrives. This could be a sign of a serious back injury.

Tell Someone

If someone is with you, ask them to report your accident. Make sure a manager is aware of the accident or the owner if you’re on private property. It’s best to report it before leaving. This starts an official record documenting what occurred. Your case will not be as strong if you do not have an accident report.

Gather Evidence

Before leaving, take photos on a camera or phone if possible. Any hazardous elements should be caught on camera. You should also take photos of yourself and your injuries. If you fall into liquid, take photos of that too. Write a description of what happened and who you spoke to. If there is video footage, ask for a copy of it.

Visit a Physician

Visit a doctor’s office or a hospital after the accident. If you have any injuries, you can be diagnosed and treated to move toward recovery. This can also show insurance companies that you did everything possible to avoid loss rather than making the injuries worse. Get copies of your x-rays, medical records, paperwork, test results, and bills.

File with Insurance

After your medical issues are taken care of, speak with the insurance company to file a claim. In most cases, the property owner will be responsible for these damaged. Call the insurance provider of the property owner to report the injury that happened. Before going forward, reach out to an attorney for advice.
